Ferry services between Dover and Calais have been disrupted due to industrial action at the French port. Earlier today, Port of Calais control staff went on strike in a dispute over pay.
SeaFrance and P&O Ferries have suspended crossings from Dover until at least 20:00 GMT, as efforts to end the industrial action remain ongoing. A sailing update posted on the P&O Ferries website stated: “We regret to advise passengers that the Port of Calais will be closed from 08h00 to 20h00 (local time) on Thursday 25th November due to industrial action by Calais Chamber of Commerce Port Staff. All our services to France are suspended until we are able to berth our vessels.”
SeaFrance has advised that passengers with advance bookings will be offered a transfer to an alternative ferry service operating between Dover and Dunkirk. Meanwhile, in the UK, Kent Police force is preparing to implement Operation Stack, which is a planned procedure designed to control traffic in the event of disruptions to cross-Channel ferry services.
According to reports, Kent Police intends to enter phase two of Operation Stack by lunchtime on Thursday, meaning that the stretch of motorway between junctions 8 and 9 coast-bound (Maidstone and Ashford) would be used as a lorry park.
