The Steam Packet Company’s Snaefell vessel has gone on sale for an undisclosed fee, as rival operator, Mezeron, abandons its activities on the Isle of Man.
Available to purchase on the Mondial Broker website, the Snaefell was removed from active duty at the beginning of the year. The Steam Packet Company’s decommissioning of the Snaefell, which was launched in 1991, followed a review of services, amid a bitter freight war with Mezeron.
The historic Steam Packet Company experienced financial difficulties not long after Mezeron established a daily commercial service between Douglas and Liverpool in October last year. Having recently announced that it will withdraw from the route as of this month, however, Mezeron no longer appears to pose a threat to the Steam Packet Company.
Nevertheless, the Isle of Man ferry operator has decided to push ahead with plans to sell off the Snaefell catamaran, which boasts capacity for up to 88 cars and 500 passengers and members of crew.
Speaking earlier this week, Brendan O’Friel, the Chairman of TravelWatch, announced that he was hopeful of an improved ferry service for residents and businesses on the Isle of Man, following Mezeron’s departure.
