P&O Ferries’ new superferry, the Spirit of Britain, will be officially named at the Port of Dover next week by Dame Kelly Holmes.
Costing approximately €180 million to build, the vessel is the sister ship of the Spirit of France, which is due to enter service in September. The Spirit of Britain can accommodate up to 2,000 passengers and features three large vehicle decks, making it ideal for combined passenger and freight travel.
The vessel is already in use on the English Channel, ferrying passengers between Dover and Calais. Next week, the superferry will make its way to Dover Port’s Eastern Docks, where 300 selected guests will watch Dame Kelly Holmes name the vessel as part of an official ceremony.
P&O Ferries’ Helen Deeble, said: “With capacity for up to 2,000 passengers and three separate vehicle decks capable of carrying nearly four kilometres of traffic parked end to end, these huge ships open a new era in cross-Channel travel. Their revolutionary design, with a unique hull form that reduces drag in shallow Channel waters and enhances fuel economy, means P&O Ferries can carry twice the payload of today’s ferries, for the same running costs.”
Dame Kelly Holmes is a double Olympic champion.
