P&O Ferries’ brand new superferry, the Spirit of Britain, has completed its maiden voyage, travelling from the Port of Dover to Calais in a little over 90 minutes. The enormous ferry, which measures approximately 100 feet across and 700 feet in length and weighs around 49,000 tonnes, is larger than any passenger vessel of its kind. In fact, the Spirit of Britain is almost too big for some of Europe’s largest ferry ports.
The Spirit of Britain was built in Finland to a precise size and weight as 49,000 tonnes is the capacity of both ports in Dover and Calais. However, by 2015, the facilities on both sides of the English Channel ought to be able to accommodate even larger and heavier ships.
Passengers aboard the Spirit of Britain on its maiden voyage were largely impressed by the vessel’s ample facilities. Unlike its predecessor, the Pride of Dover, the Spirit of Britain separates cars and commercial vehicles, meaning that the boarding process is far more straightforward. The Spirit of Britain also serves to spoil its passengers, with luxurious cabins and state-of-the-art facilities on board. Lorry drivers are also treated in luxury aboard the vessel, having access to an exclusive lounge, showers, outdoor smoking area and cinema entertainment.
