Ferry companies are forever hunting for new ways to enhance the efficiency of their ferries, to save on unnecessary costs and allow for cheaper fares for highly valued customers. Norwegian operator Fjord1 has recently enlisted the help of transport manufacturing giant Rolls Royce, to construct and provide the engines for the operator’s newest vessel.
“In planning the new ferry, Fjord 1 called for a substantial increase in efficiency,” said Matias Mork, Sales Manager of Rolls Royce. “The Rolls-Royce Azipull thrusters, two at each end of the vessel, have pulling propellers and streamlined underwater units, which turn the swirl energy from the propeller water into useful thrust. They are key to raising efficiency and we have found a significant improvement.”
It is encouraging news for environmentalists and ferry fans alike to see constant and meaningful gains in engine efficiency for some of the biggest ferries in the world. A cleaner, slicker system allows companies to charge less for fares and helps keep the oceans a healthy habitat for marine life.
Whilst there are no direct ferries from the UK to Norway, there are a number from Denmark or Germany, where a few days exploring what each country has to offer, may be a great way to spend an Autumn break.
