Although at the centre of a fierce battle for privatisation and amid Arctic weather conditions, the Port of Dover has managed to succeed where Heathrow failed, in staying open through the big freeze.
Heathrow Airport has experienced severe disruptions over the past week, with thousands of passengers finding themselves stranded after their festive flights were delayed or cancelled due to the adverse weather. The Port of Dover, on the other hand, has kept its Travel Centre open throughout the night, to ensure that passengers stay warm, with members of staff stocking up on blankets, baby milk, tea and coffee.
Director of Corporate Operations at the Port of Dover, Robin Dodridge, said: “The port is becoming well-versed in putting its plans into place for handling significant volumes of additional passengers when a major transport crisis hits the UK.”
The director continued: “We have been working hard to ensure that not only is the port open and operating normally, but that we can also accommodate and provide a welcoming service to those displaced passengers who might otherwise struggle to reach their destinations during the busy run up to Christmas. We are delighted that we can help to make rather than break many people’s festivities.”
