For those looking for a European adventure, the commencement of a new crossing from north west France to northern Spain will come as welcome news. The company GLD Atlantique, co-owned by ferry giant LD Lines and Grimaldi Lines, will offer the crossing from Saint Nazaire in France to Gijon in the north of Spain. Clearly, it is unknown how popular the route will be and as a result, the company plans to offer three ferry crossings a week at first. If the route proves as popular as anticipated, billed as “The Franco-Spanish Motorway of the Sea,” the company will provide a more regular service, with the potential for a daily ferry crossing.
The voyage is expected to take around 14 hours, allowing passengers to relax on the high quality, 800 capacity ferry used for the journey. Gijon itself offers an diverse range of things to see and do, including the dominating 117 metre high balcony tower, ‘Universidad Laboral.’ In addition, the chance to visit one of Gijon’s famous festivals (or Fiestas) presents itself in just two weeks time, with the fiesta of San Miguel beginning on 29th September.
For those who seek a direct service to France, Brittany Ferries offers crossings from Portsmouth and Plymouth to Santander.
