The UK Government has been urged to improve the road network travelling to the busy Port of Dover, which is thought to handle approximately £80 billion of trade every year and supports some 22,000 jobs. According to various motoring groups, the Port of Dover’s growth will almost certainly be stunted unless the Department for Transport implements changes in the near future. The changes include a new lane on the A20 for slow-moving vehicles, the widening of a section of road on the A2 and a permanent solution to Operation Stack, which was last called into action in December during the adverse weather conditions.
The Association of British Drivers’ assistant regional organiser, Ian Taylor, commented: “The Channel corridor is a strategic link of national importance and vital to the economy. For Dover to thrive, the port must thrive. For the port to thrive, provision must be made for future increases in traffic – especially goods vehicles. We know there’s no money right now, but we want to be there when things get going again”.
According to Mr Taylor, the plans have been backed by the Port of Dover and Freight Transport Association. Local MP Charlie Elphicke has also reportedly agreed to consult Government on the issue.
