The only route from the UK to Bilbao is the soon to be launched (March 2011) Brittany Ferries Portsmouth to Bilbao service. With two crossings per week complimenting their existing Santander ferry, it is a great way to start your holiday in Spain.
Pack as much as you can into the car (no need to worry about baggage limits or volcanic ash!), and take the ferry to Bilbao then head further into France, Spain or beyond. The overnight crossing leaves you and the family time to relax and enjoy the facilities onboard, plus the sea views and even a bit of dolphin spotting.
The ferry is the Cap Finistere, a luxury cruise ferry, with a number of restaurants, live entertainment, casinos, saunas, and a gym. Of course there’s also shopping onboard, plus a beauty salon for a last minute bit of pampering.
All cabins are ensuite and there’s a choice to suit different budgets – from the basic inside cabins, to luxury class cabins with more space and facilities. Treat yourself to a bit of luxury at the start of your holiday!
When arriving in Bilbao you’ve already cut out much of the travelling and hassle of a long drive through France, and the excellent motorway network makes getting to southern France, Spain or Portugal easy. Madrid is just three hours drive away, and the Pyrenees are in easy reach.
