More Information About France
France has always been a firm favourite with the British, and it’s still as popular today – in fact France get the most tourists of any European country). It is such a large country that there is something to suite all tastes from an exciting city break in Paris to remote countryside for ultimate relaxation. Of course you’ll also find fine architecture, world famous food (if you remember to eat at a sensible time – restaurants in the French countryside are notoriously rigid on service times!), and as we all know France is a wine-lovers paradise.
Most visitors to France from the UK will use a cross-channel ferry to arrive in Calais, and the route is served by a number of ferry operators including P&O Ferries and Seafrance. There are many crossings available at all times of the day. Crossing time is around an hour.
You don’t have to put up with the hectic Dover-Calais port though – there are numerous other options when sailing to France. You can sail to Boulogne, Cherbourg, St Malo, Caen, Roscoff, Le Havre, Dunkerque, and Dieppe. The map above gives an idea of where the ports are – just choose the one most convenient for you.
You can travel from Newhaven to Dieppe, a two hour crossing with takes you direct to north west France, and is a great destination to visit in itself.
Further along the coast is Caen where you can travel in comfort from Portsmouth with Brittany Ferries or P&O. This six hour crossing can help cut out some of the driving, depending upon where your ultimate destination in France is.
For those taking a trip to Paris, Le Havre is an ideal choice since it is closer than any of the other ports, and again you will travel in style from Portsmouth on P&O Ferries.
