Ferry operators are continually searching for ways to ensure the most environmentally friendly, cheap and clean ways to run their vessels. With this in mind, companies will be interested to hear of a radical new idea proposed by Don Lang, the man behind Transition Town Totnes – an eco-organisation based in the port of Dartmouth. Lang believes that it would be entirely viable to make Dartmouth home to a wind powered ferry, that could make a carbon neutral trip to the French town of St Malo.
The eco group have already begun discussions with both respective ports and are hoping to continue to push their idea forward. With the right backing, Lang hopes his dream can become a reality. But he is cautious, saying developments are at an ‘early stage’ for now.
Lang proposes a ferry with two masts, with the ability to carry 250 passengers, with approximately a 10 hour crossing to St Malo. Whilst investment and interest are at a very early stage, this is undoubtedly exciting news for the future direction of the ferry industry and a shining example of the efforts the industry are making to be environmentally conscious.
